Cybersecurity faculty are in demand across the nation!  The Faculty Fellowship Program will introduce and prepare students for a career path of teaching cybersecurity in a community college setting.  

Who should apply:

  • College/university students in their final year or recently graduated (within a year) with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in cybersecurity.
    • Degree program must be at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
    • Interested in exploring the career path of teaching cybersecurity in a community college setting.
    • Applicant must be a resident of the U.S. or Puerto Rico and have legal authorization to work in the U.S.
    • Students from underrepresented groups in cybersecurity are encouraged to apply.
  • This workshop is not for:
    • Current cybersecurity college/university faculty.
    • Anyone with formal teacher education or significant teaching experience.

About the Program: 

NCyTE Cybersecurity Fellowship Orientation (4 hours): All accepted candidates must attend one of the virtual orientations. Kickstart your journey with a comprehensive virtual orientation designed to introduce you to the dynamic field of cybersecurity education. Discover the significant impact you can have on the nation's workforce through community college teaching. This orientation will also outline expectations, schedule and commitment, and details of the program.

Microsoft 21st Century Skills: Classroom Management, Methods, and Pedagogy Workshop (16 hours)Prerequisite is completion of the Orientation. All participants will be required to complete this 16-hour virtual workshop designed to prepare participants with basic knowledge and skills to be an effective community college cybersecurity educator. Participants will acquire insights into teaching and learning pedagogy, classroom management skills, student assessment, curriculum development, and the cultivation of student workforce competencies. The workshop will prepare students to take the required Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE) certification.

Cybersecurity Fundamentals Bootcamp: Security+ (32 hours):  Prerequisite is completion of the Microsoft 21st Century Skills workshop. Participants of the Fellowship program are expected to complete a 32-hour Cybersecurity Fundamental Bootcamp. The bootcamp includes three days of in-person instruction at Moraine Valley Community College and three days of virtual instruction.

This class will require participants to create:

  • Lesson plans
  • Instructional materials
  • Assessments and rubrics
  • Hands-on lab activities
  • Collaborative / team exercise

The bootcamp will cover the Security+ domains:

  • Security principles and concepts
  • Threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations
  • Security architecture
  • Security operations
  • Security management, governance, and compliance

Teaching Assistant Assignment: Upon successful completion of the Cybersecurity Fundamentals Bootcamp, participants will be placed at a community college as a teaching assistant, where they will contribute a minimum of 60 hours of service, lead at least one lesson, and provide the required deliverables per a student teaching assistant agreement. Collaborating with their host college supervisor, participants will co-create a flexible schedule and assignments that align with their strengths and goals.

    Microsoft 21st Century Skills workshop (16 hours, all dates required) - virtual:

    • March 29 & 30, 2024 (Friday & Saturday) – 9AM-1PM PDT
    • April 5 & 6, 2024 (Friday & Saturday) – 9AM-1PM PDT

    Cybersecurity Fundamentals Bootcamp (32 hours, all dates required) - virtual & in-person

      • Friday, May 10, 2024: 9AM-1PM PST (Virtual)
      • In-Person at Moraine Valley Community College
      • Tuesday, May 21, 2024  6PM – 10PM CDT
      • Wednesday, May 22, 2024 8:30AM – 4:30PM CDT
      • Thursday, May 23, 2024  8:30AM – 12:30PM CDT

              Teaching Assistant assignment at a local community college (minimum of 60 hours). A virtual assignment may be possible if approved with the host college. (TBD Summer 2024)

                How to apply:

                Orientation workshops (choose one):

                • Feb. 9, 2024 (9AM-1PM PST) - Application deadline: Jan. 24, 2024 or until filled
                • Feb. 21, 2024 (2-6PM PST) - Application deadline: Feb. 4, 2024 or until filled

                   Incomplete applications will not be considered.

                  Stipends: 

                  Eligible participants will receive a stipend of up to $4,500 based on successful achievement of the following milestones over the course of the program.

                  • Complete Classroom Practices workshop and submit badge transcript/achievement certificate - $250
                  • Pass the Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE) certification exam and submit evidence of certification - $250
                  • Complete the Cybersecurity Fundamentals Bootcamp (32 hours) and participate in bootcamp activities - $1,000
                  • Travel per diem: up to $1,200 for two days hotel, meals, and airfare for non-local residents. Must complete a travel support agreement.
                  • Complete teaching assistant assignments – up to $1,800, participants are required to teach one lesson in a regular community college classroom and provide the required deliverables per a student teaching assistant agreement.
                  • Provide a current W9 tax form to the NCyTE Center

                      Facilitators:

                      Dr. John Sands, Co-PI of NCyTE and Director of the Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA) and professor at Moraine Valley Community College in Chicago, and his team of expert instructors will lead the workshops.

                      Dr. Kristine Christensen is a professor of Management Information Systems at Moraine Valley Community College. Dr. Christensen also serves as Moraine Valley's Director of Faculty Development and is responsible for designing, developing, and evaluating professional development programs for faculty and staff.
